The Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) was – as usual – an extravagant affair with huge stands, big crowds (even on the Press Days), and a massive amount of product.

Automotive Mergers & Acquisitions - Dead or Dormant?

Looking back at the twenty years or so that I have been working at the senior levels of the motor industry as a consultant and senior executive, some of the most challenging and enjoyable times have related to working on potential mergers and acquisitions.  Over the last two or three years of the financial crisis, everything has gone fairly quiet on the M&A front, globally and across the different parts of the industry - manufacturers, suppliers and dealers.  Does that reflect a permanent change in mindset, or simply the calm before the storm?

Daimler Renault deal will have wideapread impact

The alliance announced  today  between  Daimler AG  and  Renault has been widely predicted and commented on for some weeks, including the 3.1% cross-shareholdings (split between Renault and Nissan in the case of the investment in Daimler).  However, whilst this deal was expected to focus on small cars, providing future product for Daimler's smart brand, and economies of scale for Renault-Nissan through supplying the platform and powertrain, the small print contains a number of other areas of collaboration, and the implications reach well beyond the three parties directly involved.

Geneva Show 2010

It's that time of the year again - time for the auto industry's favourite show.  Only two main halls, right next to the airport and no domestic dominant player mean that whilst other shows struggle and even cancel their events, Geneva marches on.  The exhibitor teams were a bit smaller, and the hospitality less lavish, but the industry top brass still turned out in force, and there was plenty to see...

Fiat and Chrysler - Third Time Lucky?

The announcement that Fiat is in talks with Cerberus to form an alliance with Chrysler is a significant step towards the sort of consolidation that Sergio Marchionne said would be required back in December last year. But what are the chances of success?  Both have been in transatlantic alliances before - Fiat with GM (and almost with Ford before that), Chrysler through their acquisitions of Simca and Rootes, then as part of Daimler Chrysler.  Will this be third time lucky?
